ATP! Track By Track Exclusive: Joyce Manor - "Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired"

To celebrate the release of Joyce Manor's stunning new album, "Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired", Alter The Press couldn't be more pleased to present this exclusive track by track guide written by David Liebe Hart (most notably known from Adult Swim's Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!).

Disclaimer: I’m an oldie but a goodie born in the 1950’s. I used to write record reviews in the 70’s when I went to LA City College. I reviewed “I Learned The Truth at Seventeen” by Janis Ian. But, I like a mixture of music that young people like too. This is a great album from a punk rock band called Joyce Manor. I feel the album cover is romantic.

1) These Kinds of Ice Skates

This song has great lyrics and music. I used to ice skate when I was a kid growing up in the mid-west. This song reminds me of the bunny rabbit punk rock band almost. I saw them perform at the Hollywood Bowl where I do street entertaining. I got in because I know Ed Tom, the general manager.

2) Comfortable Clothes

I like to wear comfortable clothes, especially when it’s cold like it is tonight. I wish I had a beautiful woman to dress up next to me, but instead its just me and the five fingers of love. This song has a lot of eighth notes. I like all the enthusiasm. It’s not too salty.

3) See How Tame I Can Be

I need somebody to tame me.; a beautiful blonde or brunette or redhead. Tamed by love. I think the drum machine is great. They go right into the song without a big introduction. Each song has it’s own uniqueness and it’s own personality. It shows these people know music theory real well.

4) Drainage

Drainage is what being with an old bag does to you. It’s like a parent nagging you. The guitar is very soothing. It reminds me of easy listening music you would hear in an elevator. This song will put you to sleep, but it’s good. It should be called “Sleepy Thing”.

5) Video Killed The Radio Star

I hope they got permission to do this song. I just heard somebody copy the ghost song we wrote. When I was a kid growing up at 8136 South Ellis in Chicago there used to be a ghost named the Pickle Man who would come into my room at night and tickle me. There was another ghost named Mr. Moose. Anyway, I wrote a song about it, but somebody copied me. He took the melody but changed my original words. I think it was a fan. He quit working at the Starbucks in the Ralphs on Western and the next thing I know a similar song is on the radio. That’s why you need to get you stuff copyrighted.

6) If I Needed You There

This is a cool song. He loves his eighth notes and sixteenth notes. I want to learn how to play guitar like this. Then the other guys can do the puppets.

7) Bride of Usher

This sounds like that band from England with the guy with the real dramatic voice that they play in the car for me sometimes. This could be an album they play on the radio.

8) Violent Inside

The feeling of being violent inside is terrible. It makes people want to kill themselves. Whitney Houston was violent inside and so was Don Cornelius. This could be the best song on the album. They really mixed this well.

9) I’m Always Tired

This is a song I can relate to, being tired. This is the only song I think is so-so on the album. He could do away with the profanity to get the message across. It just didn’t touch me and move me like the rest of the songs on the album did. Other than that, this is one of the best punk rock albums I’ve heard. In German, I would give it a “Ya” instead of a “Nein”.
