ATP! Track By Track Exclusive: Great Cynics - "In The Valley"

To celebrate the release of Great Cynics' new EP, "In The Valley", we're pleased to present a special track by track guide written by frontman Giles Bidder.

The three-piece will release their new record on February 28th through Kind Of Like Records.

"In The Valley" is a short, three song EP of re-recorded versions of originally acoustic songs I released from 2009 – 2010. At that time, I was playing solo under the name Cynics.

[Shortly afterwards I got a cease and desist letter, and with Iona and Bob being so great and all…]

1) In The Valley

I wrote this the day I moved to Brighton. My first day in that bedsit was bleak. I tried to get my head together by going out and buying various items I had never tried before (avocados, olives and rolling tobacco) before listening to the self-titled Lifetime record. This came out of me shortly after and is an homage to my main inspiration, Tombo ‘Blaze All Day Every Day’ Hawes.

2. 14 Coleman St

There was a period when I was waking up on my friends’ living room floor more than I was in my own bed. It was the kind of house where there were always travellers, couch surfers or semi-homeless people sleeping on the couch and the mattress on the floor. 14 Coleman St pieces together some of the stories from the house.

3. You’re Alright

There are no metaphors in this song, there’s no treading on eggshells and there’s certainly not much tact… it’s a stream of consciousness. I wrote it for my own piece of mind more than for the sake of writing a song.
