Album Review: Into It. Over It. - Proper

Prolific would be one word to describe Evan Weiss, also known by his moniker of Into It. Over It. Releasing numerous split EP's alongside two well received projects, including the overwhelming '52 Weeks' and the recent 'Twelve Towns', it feels as if this isn't a debut effort from him. But it is. Consider 'Embracing Facts' a first impression rather than an introduction, Weiss' distorted vocals are in the background of a wall of noise, screaming to push their way through, relinquishing himself of all ties to the singer-songwriter label.

It's truly how Weiss counters such rough efforts with the somberness of 'No Good Before Noon' as well as, album highlight, 'Where Your Nights Often End'. The opacity of his voice sheds the aggressive side to his music. Needless to say that there is hostility in songs such as 'Discretion and Depressing People' where Weiss announces, "It's the awful ones like you that keep the better people sane".

The vague finale, 'The Frames That Used To Greet Me', really bookends 'Proper'. A sparse effort featuring a lonely folk influenced guitar alongside Weiss' vocals and poignant lyricism. His lyrics are easily relatable and hit home for the average twenty-something year old, on 'Proper', it feels as if he isn't restricted by a concept or an overlooking deadline and just spends as much time as he feels for these songs. 'Proper' feels...proper?

4/5

'Proper' is out now on No Sleep Records.
