Live Review: Man Overboard, The Living Daylights, Watch Commander & Directions - Victoria Inn, Derby - 19/7/11

Tonight's show sees Man Overboard taking a break from their UK tour with Polar Bear Club for a intimate headline show in Derby. Although a slightly smaller show, the organizers (Derby DIY Collective) pulled together an impressionable line-up. First up were local band, Directions with their Balance & Composure-esque sound which at times seemed drawn out, yet contained enough substance and energy to win over the crowd. With sensible mix of post-hardcore and hardcore punk, Directions seem to be taking the right approach that is more than likely to get themselves noticed in the coming months.

Worcester's Watch Commander were next and showcased their latest EP, 'Closer to Home' in a strong light; driving punk rock anthems that suited the night's overall feel. With fast, energetic numbers and raw vocals, Watch Commander have a decent enough sound to stand out from the crowd.

The same can be said for The Living Daylights from Lincoln. A thriving punk rock sound, that uses well-structured melodies and with over three years experience as a band, it is clear tonight the band have perfected their sound, thus leaving a strong impression on tonight's crowd. Although for some; due to time constraints, their set seemed a bit short.

The aforementioned time constraints somewhat affected Man Overboard's set. However as expected, the New Jersey group provided a fast and fun set with a material coming from last year's 'Real Talk' release and older material, with stand out moments being 'Montrose', 'World Favourite', and 'Love Your Friends, Die Laughing'.

On the whole, Man Overboard and company provided a great show in a good intimate setting, that suited all those involved. For the three support bands, tonight was a great example of how strong the UK DIY scene is right now, whilst Man Overboard seemed at home in a small setting and on top of that, a great crowd that responded appreciatively to all four bands. Overall a great night, with hardly any faults that showed DIY promoters can still pull nights like this off.
