Album Review: Magden Audio - Game Amongst Thieves
The EP kicks off with 'No Fate But What We Make', a lively opener with a driving drum beat that makes an instant impact. The only problem with this song; and it kind of highlights my point of refinement, is that the last thirty seconds or so sounds like a completely different song that detracts away from the previous three minutes and what was a perfectly good song anyway.
The sudden change of sound happens again in next song 'Follow You Cats Eyes' but instead of dwelling on something that’s already been mentioned, it would be rude to leave out the good, and what this song has, is an absolutely brilliant chorus and a key change that could very well make this a fan favourite.
Title track 'Game Amongst Thieves' kind of ambles along before the chorus hits, but again, the chorus is great, it’s atmospheric and done to perfection, I can see this being a real live monster, especially with the huge outro.
As the EP draws to a close, the heights of 'Game Amongst Thieves' aren’t really hit again 'Slow Motion Scene' suffers from the problem of the first two songs in that half way through, in that it’s like it lost concentration and turned into a different song, thankfully things get back on track with the closing song “Friday Streetwise” again another song that relies on the quality of the chorus, but that quality more than backs up the rest of the song, it’s an apt closer full of energy, something that is required to make any listener carry an interest into future releases.
As mentioned, Magden Audio have put out a solid EP, and in regards to the sound changes throughout the EP, I can see what they’re going for, it’s just the execution of it is poor, I will however be looking forward to their next release.
