Single Review: Brother - Darling Buds of May

Hyped up by NME as "the brightest guitar hopes of 2011", Slough's Brother have been making themselves known here and there since last summer. With a cocky and confident attitude, the four-piece seem to have the gift of the gab but ultimately the question is do they have the songs?

With the obvious 90's "Britpop" influence in both sound and image, 'Darling Buds of May' proves to be favourable introduction to the band. Its simple style and lyrics bring about a guilty attraction to the band, especially when you realise they're musically trying to be classic Oasis; just listen to the guitar part 1 minute into it and tell not it dosen't remind you of the latter's 'Acquiesce'.

Nevertheless this showing from Brother, to an extent, fills any hype they have but declaring them as "the next big thing" with just a handful of songs is over-exaggerated. However 'Darling Buds of May''s pop sensibilities and overall tone is descent enough to give the band credit where it is due.

3.5/5

'Darling Buds of May' by Brother is released on February 28th through Chess Club Records.
