Album Review: Tall Trees - Alexandria EP

For a band that just formed a year ago, Tall Trees has been busy. Spending the year building a fan base through tours, Tall Trees from Greater Manchester, England, has been developing their sound and has released a three-song EP, 'Alexandria'. This EP, while short, packs diversity as the band gives listeners a melodic mix of sounds.

The title track starts off the EP with a slower start but breaks into a catchy, energetic chorus. 'Alexandria' has the feel of a teenage-style love song with punk rock influences but somehow works without being cheesy. 'On Your Marks,' unlike 'Alexandria,' comes off a bit cheesy and overdone. The song improves as it goes on, especially with a nice instrumental break, but the slow lyrics and ballad-like chorus seems stale and sounds like a song we’ve all heard before.

Tall Trees is at their best on the last track 'Join the Living.' The song breaks into an emotional, intense chorus with the lyrics, “I hope you find what you’re missing when you’re finding your way/I hope you swim to the surface when the darkness is near/Won’t you come back/Join the living.” The band has tried different things on every track of this EP, but this is where the band’s musical abilities shine through, and the song construction is more sophisticated than the other tracks.

Tall Trees’ 'Alexandria' is a diverse mix from a band trying to really find their sound. While there were a few lows among the highlights of this EP, Tall Trees still has a bit of work to do to develop a solid sound.
