Album Review: Hope & State - Grand Gestures

Hailing from London, Hope & State make an attempt to create a solid first EP entitled 'Grand Gestures'. Sadly, all that was really made was the attempt. The four-piece, led by vocalist Irman Siddiqi, begins "Grand Gestures" with “London, Oh London”, a drum-driven song that indicates, quite clearly, the tone of the EP. Edward Wrede’s drumming stands out throughout the five-song trip and is certainly an added bonus for the ears.

“At The Sight Of You” is quick to show off Hope & State’s influences with a mixture of punk-rock guitar parts and old-fashioned vocal melodies. Unfortunately, Siddiqi’s vocals fail to bring the song much applause because of an unnecessary attempt to display his vocal range at the song's end.

Perhaps the brightest spot on the EP, “The Ever True” starts with upbeat vocals and guitar parts that persist throughout the track. If you’re a fan of The Gaslight Anthem, this is certainly the song to listen to, though it doesn’t quite pay full homage to the song’s source of influence.

The Safest Lies” and “Change Is The Constant” are both dragged down by troubled vocals, which is the main issue facing "Grand Gestures". Musically, the EP is held together with strong drums and good lead guitar parts, but Irman Siddiqi’s vocals do nothing but hinder any praise Hope & State might strive to receive with this first musical effort.
