Album Review: I Hate My Ex - All Things That Are Good

Here at Alter The Press we get sent loads of records to review on a regular daily basis. Sometimes some records are just left for months without being touched and very rarely once these records are heard. You quickly realise you maybe should of listened to it sooner.

Worcester, MA's I Hate My Ex are an unsigned band who last October released 'All Things That Are Good', their debut full-length and one that's been stuck in my inbox, unfortunately, for awhile. A record that perhaps doesn't deserve the elaborate intro, but still deserves some praise, as the band's brand of high-tempo catchy rock is very favourable.

Tracks like 'Overture', 'Mr. F' and 'Prose & Probability' are fast paced and tight with plenty of energy, kind of like You Me At Six but delivered with an actual American tongue. The albums highlights are driven by the bands strong blend of vocal melodies, that are backed up by fierce yet acceptable guitars.

Unfortunately someone must of thought it'd be a good idea to play with auto-tune and garageband, as the band decide to throw in a few electronic-based tracks that ultimately spoil the albums flow and overall vibe. 'Song 27' is one of these tracks that just does not suit the bands style.

However if I Hate My Ex can take the good parts and stick with their rock-based material, they could take the next step as a band, as 'All Things That Are Good' proves to be good but only just. There's potential there, they just need to build on it. If not they can just carry on shamelessly keep covering Taylor Swift songs, something they do with album closer, 'You Belong With Me', which is something you can't help but enjoy.
