Album Review: My Lost Youth - Take The Stage EP
‘The Aftermath’ opens the EP with its Angels and Airwaves style intro to its outstanding chorus, the only problem this song has is that at times it sounds as if its three different songs combined into one. While each individual component is brilliant, the differences between the intro, chorus and bridge sometimes leave you a bit confused as to where you are with the song. That being said, it’s an outstanding opener and a great choice to open to EP with.
Next up we have title track ‘Take The Stage’, with an intro that threatens to burst into ‘About A Girl’ by The Academy Is. It’s so very similar, although I’m sure it wasn’t intentional. The song continues in an impressive way, the verses are solid and although the vocal harmonies sometimes clash and sound a bit out of tune, the chorus is once again very well written and catchy enough to have you singing along after a listen or two.
'I’m not your ecstasy' carries on in much the same form. Its is becoming obvious that this band are very talented at writing good rock songs, the band overall are very tight, with perhaps this song seeing the band at their most complicated musically, they pull it off with style and great timing. The dual vocal outro is an excellent alternative to what has been offered so far.
In perhaps the best song of the EP 'Let Them Talk' is honestly almost so perfectly written, it’s brilliant. It gets to the point straight away, the verses are fast paced and the chorus is verging on excellent. The song sounds more polished than the three previous, while the others suffer from slightly muffled vocals that tend to slightly go out of tune. We’re given vocals here that are pitch perfect and effective. I can see this song working especially well in a live setting and with this song I take my hat off as it perfectly shows the potential of this band.
EP closer is ‘Final Rounds’ an apt title perhaps, this song has the vibe of a closing song, it gives the listener of a preview of what’s to come and forces you to stick around, the song has a message, and a clear one “We’ll fight to the final rounds”, as this band aren’t going anywhere soon.
‘Take the Stage’ is a very, very impressive debut EP. The only thing I can mark it down on is sometimes the vocal melodies aren’t always there, sometimes sounding out of place and out wobbling slightly out of tune, but that’s just a minor fault in an otherwise great introduction from My Lost Youth. This band are one decent support slot from getting a possible nationwide fan base, they’re on the verge of good things, providing they go about it in the right way, we might be hearing a lot more from these very soon.
