Album Review: Boys Will Be Boys - The Release
Their annoying brand of power pop isn’t new or exciting on the contrary it’s generic, overproduced and soulless. It sounds like the producer has just figured out how to use the vocoder plug in and has just rinsed it on EVERY track! Cher would be proud!
First track 'Jaded' did sound promising I must say BUT then the studio trickery kicks in and completely devalues the song and leaves you feeling angry at the thought of how much money this record cost to make! I’m all for a band experimenting in the studio but this is complete overkill. The way that the entire recording is Auto-tuned and overproduced to hell makes it impossible to imagine that Boys Will Be Boys could recreate this live.
The lyric “We’re young and in love, and you’re my best best buddy” which features in the song “Make This Count” marks the ultimate low point of the album for me but for the first time I’m actually moved… toward the remote to turn this cruelty against music off!
I would delve deeper into each song and help to give these guys constructive criticism, but as the songs are as shallow as a puddle I don’t really have an awful lot to work with plus I’m finding it increasingly hard to hear past that damned vocoder which is making it impossible to hear any content or sustenance.
I’m sure these guys are fantastic musicians and this really isn’t a personal attack at all I just think someone needs to stand up and say “Right boys joke over….. we’ve all had a laugh and no ones been hurt but what say we stop releasing generic sound alike bands and start steering the industry in a more credible direction!”
Not my words but something I read in Fly magazine which completely knocks the nail on the head for me in this case; “This is music your little sister listens to… if your little sister is a T**t!
