Album Review: Thrice - Beggars
Elsewhere 'Circles' is a slow and beautiful track that drifts aimlessly. Whilst 'In Exile' is bassy rock song with laid back vocal delivery. 'At the Last' and 'Talking Through Glass', sees the band at perhaps their most upbeat, with their fast pace and all-round lively sound, as Kensrue's straining voice takes over in places.
Alternatively 'Wood & Wire' is Thrice at their most depressing, a slow burning track that on first listen doesn't do anything but on further listen, it creates a superb atmosphere and leaves you hanging on to every last word. 'The Great Exchange' is done in a similar fashion, with its soft guitar and drums supporting Kensrue's strong vocals.
The title track closes the record and merges 'The Great Exchange' as 'Beggars' is simple and slow with a superb build up, that leads up to screeching guitar effects playing right to the very end. When it is all over, you are left with the impression that 'Beggars' is a record that deserves plenty of attention, and Thrice are one of the most consistent bands today, in terms of releases.
The return of Thrice; despite it being a bit earlier then expected, is welcomed with open arms. As 'Beggars' is a strong and consistent record, from a band who have matured and somewhat distanced themselves from their past material. Add to this the lyrical sentiment and layered song structure, makes 'Beggars' an overall impressive record. It's downfall however is that it is difficult to highlight certain tracks. As over 10 songs, Thrice have managed to compile a collection that flows with ease, whilst at the same time being able to add variation to the record.
4.5/5
'Beggars' by Thrice is released digitally on August 11th and it's physical release on September 15th on Vagrant Records.
