Album Review: Portugal The Man - The Satanic Satanist

Not every band produce 4 albums in 4 years. Than again every band are not Portugal The Man. Their previous efforts have seen the Portland-based band go from post-emo to electronica and on the whole being an experimental band. It could be said 'The Satanic Satanist' is no different, as it is a record that takes on genres such as, funk, pop, indie, blues and psychedelia. However it is still accessible.

Opener, 'People Say' has a bright indie pop sound that starts off the record well and a chorus that makes you feelgood inside. Whilst 'Lovers In Love' is a funk-fest with a slight psychedelic tint, as lead singer John Baldwin Gourley's high-pitched voice is dominated by a fast-paced beat and sees the band as a whole, getting the momentum going.

The bright, hippy-like songs continue with 'The Sun'; a breezy summer pop song that is pleasant on the ear; a laid back acoustic-based track with high vocal harmonies.

At times the band take a somewhat experimental, retro approach, as tracks like 'The Home' and 'Everyone Is Golden' are lead by organ keys and group vocals with lyrics that leave you questioning why the band are so happy or have they been on something. Whatever the answer it is, does not matter as the end result is affective.

One of the key attributes of this record, is that it grabs you when you don't expect it. 'Let You Down' is haunting and creates an eerie, captivating atmosphere. However one of the downfalls of this record is that moments like these don't stick around long enough; the longest track being just 4 minutes and 39 seconds long.

On the whole 'The Satanic Satanist' is a laid back and enjoyable record, that despite its quirky moments, enables you to listen back to a group of musicians who are willing and keen to do things a little bit different. Portugal The Man have created a captivating record that contains a special aura that you don't find in every band.
